Introduction
Welcome back to another insightful edition of the Brand Blueprint! Today, we're thrilled to bring you an exciting conversation with Dwan White, an influential figure in the beauty industry, whose expertise in brand innovation has shaped the way we perceive and use beauty products.
The Journey Begins
Dwan’s career journey is nothing short of inspirational. After an unexpected career shift from higher education to the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry, she found herself drawn to the burgeoning world of beauty products. Her passion was ignited by a serendipitous encounter with an enticing ad for Perfective, a hair product brand, which led her to connect with the company and eventually carve out a significant role within it.
Creating a Legacy
As a brand architect, Dwan’s role at House of Cheatham spanned over two decades, during which she developed over 200 hair care and body products sold in more than 30 countries. Some of the iconic brands she helped shape include Africa's Best, Originals Olive Oil, and most notably, Aunt Jackie's Curls and Coils.
Dwan’s approach to brand creation is rooted in extensive research. She emphasizes the importance of understanding consumer needs and behaviors to create products that resonate deeply with their users. Her meticulous research has uncovered vital market segments within the natural hair community, allowing her to tailor products to specific audiences.
Innovative Products and Processes
Dwan’s innovation extends beyond products to processes. She introduced the term “silk press” to the hair care lexicon, which has since become a widely recognized term in the industry. Her foresight in trademarking this term and creating the first thermal styling kit for at-home use—Argan Smooth Silk Press Kit—highlights her ability to foresee trends and meet unmet consumer needs.
Navigating Retail Challenges
Dwan’s journey has not been without challenges. When launching innovative products, she often faced hurdles in retail placement and consumer education. Her experience underscores the importance of working closely with retailers and continuously educating consumers to ensure product success.
Moving Forward with Multicultural Beauty Insider
After House of Cheatham was sold in 2021, Dwan took a well-deserved break and redirected her energy towards fulfilling another unmet need in the beauty industry—creating a dedicated news platform for the ethnic multicultural segment. Multicultural Beauty Insider (MCBI) was born to provide news, insights, and trends within this niche, offering a unique resource for industry professionals and enthusiasts alike.
A Partnership with Clark Atlanta University
In a significant move, MCBI has partnered with Clark Atlanta University’s School of Business to host the first Branding Black Beauty Conference. This event aims to educate and inspire the next generation of beauty industry professionals, bridging gaps between academic knowledge and real-world industry practices.
Conclusion
Dwan White’s journey is a testament to the power of innovation, resilience, and the importance of in-depth consumer research. Her contributions to the beauty industry have not only set new standards but have also inspired countless professionals and entrepreneurs. As she continues to shape the future with MCBI and her ongoing projects, we look forward to seeing more groundbreaking work from this trailblazing leader.
